Prof Ian Hickie

Professor Ian Hickie is Co-Director of Health and Policy at The University of Sydney’s Brain and Mind Centre. Professor Hickie is an internationally renowned researcher in clinical psychiatry and a leading voice on mental health issues. Professor Hickie was an inaugural Commissioner on Australia’s National Mental Health Commission (2012-18), overseeing enhanced accountability for mental health reform. He was also a founding director of headspace, which provides support for young people, and the inaugural chief executive of beyondblue, a non-profit organisation working to address issues associated with depression, anxiety, and suicide.Professor Hickie is now focused on developing real-time personalized and measurement-based care systems for use in partnership with young people and their families. In his role with the National Mental Health Commission and his independent research, health system, and advocacy roles, he has been at the forefront of the move to integrate mental health and suicide prevention with other healthcare aspects.
